Paint Night at the Library is on Tuesday, June 27, at 7:00 p.m., at the Arnolds Park Library. This month we will be painting a succulent pot with several succulents included. All of the supplies will be provided by the libraries. There are only 30 spots available so pre-register at the Arnolds Park Public Library, Spirit Lake Public Library, or the Milford Memorial Library. The cost is $15 for registration. Would you like a chance to shop the Friends of Milford Memorial Library’s Book Sale before it opens to the public? Please join other volunteers and the library staff for set up beginning at 11:00 a.m., on Thursday, July 20, with a potluck to follow. Once everything is in place, let the shopping begin. The Friends group is also in need of volunteers to work the book sale on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Celebrate audiobook month with MML! Playaways already have the audio contained within and the battery to make it play, there’s nothing to do but plug in earphones and enjoy. Wonderbooks are printed books with a ready-to-play audiobook and critical thinking questions. We also have CD audiobooks to play in the vehicle or in the house.  Finally, have an audiobook with you wherever you go by downloading Libby onto your cell phone or tablet.
 
Attention Kindle users, it is now easier to use Libby. The Libby by Overdrive app can now be found in the Amazon app store. Simply go to the Amazon app store, search Libby by Overdrive, and download. Then follow the app’s instructions. Contact the library with any questions.

Milford Memorial Library: Youth Corner

All of the staff at Milford Memorial Library love seeing the families and daycares at the summer reading programs. Here’s what is coming up next at our library. Building Bookworms with Miss Hannah from Dickinson County ISU 4-H & Youth will be at 1:30 p.m. this Wednesday, June 21. Her program will focus on animal sounds, ice cream, and even milking a cow (say what!). Minds in Motion is going well with the kids using their hands and minds with all of the sensory items. Our next one is at 3:00 p.m. on Monday, June 26. To finish out this month, Miss Becca will have a Building Bookworms storytime at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 29. Milford Memorial Library News
 
On Tuesday, June 20, at 7:00 p.m., at Milford Memorial Library join Milford Memorial Library, Arnolds Park Library, and Spirit Lake Library in welcoming Noggin and her human Karen. Noggin and Karen will inform us about the Alaskan Iditarod, the sport of dog sledding, what tools, tricks, and tips they use. Everyone is encouraged to attend this free program. Thank you to the Friends of the Milford Library, Friends of the Arnolds Park library, and Friends of the Spirit Lake Library for sponsoring this program.
 
Any interested parties are welcome to join MML’s Open book Discussion Group, on Tuesday, June 20, at 1:00 p.m., at MML. We will be discussing the featured book, The Hiding Place by Corrie Ten Boom. Any interested individuals may find a copy at the library. It is not necessary to attend all of the meetings, and you are welcome to come and go as you please.
 
Adult Craft Series on Wednesday, June 21, will be a Faux Stain Glass Votive. This craft will be kit only. The kit includes glass stain, leading, votive holder and instructions. The cost for this craft is $5.00 and registration is required. The Young Adult Summer Subscription Box 1 is available for registration until Friday, June 16. Registration can still be done by calling Milford Memorial Library at 712-338-4643, Arnolds Park Library at 712-332-2033, or Spirit Lake Library at 712-336-2667 before Friday, June 16.
 
Young Adult Summer Subscription Box 2 is available for registration. Summer Subscription Box 2 will run from Tuesday, June 20, through Friday, June 30. Fourth through twelfth graders will be getting materials to decorate terra cotta pots, succulents, and potting supplies. A reading list, recipe, and playlist will also be included. Registration can be done by calling Milford Memorial Library at 712-338-4643, Arnolds Park Library at 712-332-2033, or Spirit Lake Library at 712-336-2667 before Friday, June 30.

Milford Memorial Library: Youth Corner

Miss Becca at Milford Memorial Library has two upcoming library programs. The first program is Minds in Motion at 3:00 p.m. on Monday, June 19. This is an unstructured, sensory playtime where the kids can explore and play with a variety of toys such as water beads, kinetic sand, and blocks. The second program is Building Bookworms with Miss Hannah from Dickinson County ISU 4-H & Youth at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 21. Her program will have different stations for the kids to experience animal sounds and even milk a cow. All Young Adults, 4th-12th graders, are invited to bring their imaginations to Milford Memorial Library on Wednesday, June 14, for Bad Art Day.  From 10:30 a.m. to Noon, they will be letting loose, creating artwork and not worrying about what it looks like. Community Connections at MML will be on Thursday, June 15, at 10:30 a.m., at the library. This month’s program is called Spend Smart. Eat Smart. with Dickinson County ISU Extension. Community Connections is open to adults wanting to learn and socialize. Coffee and refreshments are provided by the Friends of the Milford Library. This program is held on the third Thursday of each month at 10:30 a.m. This is a free program and attendees are encouraged to socialize after presentations

​Miss Becca has some great programs at the library including Minds in Motion and Building Bookworms. Minds in Motion will take place at 3:00 p.m. each Monday in June and on July 10. This is a sensory based program with a variety of items for the kiddos to explore and play with on their own. Building Bookworms is a storytime full of stories, movement, learning, and crafts. All of the dates take place at 10:30 a.m. on Thursdays with one exception on June 21 at 1:30 p.m. They include June 8 (Kindermusik), June 21 (ISU 4-H & Youth), June 29 (superheroes), July 6 (Pearson Lakes Art Center), and July 13 (ourselves). Milford Memorial Library’s 2023 Young Adult Summer Reading Challenge will run Thursday, June 1, through Friday, August 4.  Fourth through twelfth graders will fill in a square for every 15 minutes they read or listen to an audiobook. Once completed, return your bookmark to MML for a small portable charger with flashlight and to be placed into a larger prize drawing.  Make sure to write your first and last name and phone number on the back. Young Adults may pick up another bookmark to get more entries into the larger prize, but will only receive one charger.

We encourage you to use the library in many different ways.

On Wednesday, June 7, at 5:30 p.m., an open meeting of the Board of Trustees for the Milford Memorial Library will take place in the Milford Community Center. The agenda will be posted on MML’s website and front bulletin board at least 24 hours in advance of the meeting. Everyone is welcome to attend and offer their thoughts in order to make MML a better library.

Spirit Lake, Arnolds Park, and Milford Libraries

Woo hoo, it’s finally here! Please join your fellow librarians from Spirit Lake, Arnolds Park, and Milford this coming Thursday, June 1, at the Kick Off Celebration. There will be two free movie showings of Trolls at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. at the Milford Pioneer Theatre. Plus, if you bring some nonperishables, you can get one free popcorn. All three libraries will have information about their programming, as well as all of the joint get togethers.

Then join your family and friends for some dinosaur adventures with Curt Strutz. His dinosaur program will be at 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 7, at the Pearson Lakes Art Center. Next on the list of programs will be the Iowa PBS STEAM Stations at 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. at Central Park in Arnolds Park. This van will bring lots of hands-on activities and explorations for the kids. As always, please check in with your local youth librarian for any questions or further information.

This involves the kiddos dipping Q-tips into paint and making a bunch of colorful dots on their canvas. Then join your family and friends the following week for Building Bookworms: Llamas (storytime) at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, May 15, and Minds in Motion (sensory playdate) at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 16.

While you are here, grab some books featuring May things: space (Space Day), Star Wars (Star Wars Day), turtles (World Turtle Day), sports (Physical Fitness and Sports Month), and butterflies/caterpillars.

There will be two Building Bookworms (storytimes) at 10:30 a.m. on Mondays, May 1, and May 15. The themes will be Mother’s Day (craft: bug jar) and llamas (craft: crinkle paper llama). Afterschool Activity will be at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 11, with the project being point art. Lastly, we will have Minds in Motion (sensory play) at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 16.

Participants can choose either night and the get the choice of putting their house number or last name on the piece. All of the supplies will be provided by the libraries. There is a limited number of spots available for each night so pre-register at the Arnolds Park Public Library, Spirit Lake Public Library, or the Milford Memorial Library. The cost is $30 for registration. Registrants will need to pay by April 20 to secure their spot. Friday, April 21, is the last day for MML’s Young Adult a Mario Challenge Box. Fourth through twelfth graders will be given the supplies to create a flying Boo Ghost, a table-top game, and “It’s Me, Mario” inspired paper activities. Overdrive will be discontinued on May 1. Library patrons will still be able to borrow free electronic books, audiobooks, and magazines from Bridges with Libby, Overdrive’s newer reading app. Need help setting up Libby, please stop by the library or give us a call at 712-338-4643.
 
With the nicer weather, don’t let your to-be -read list grow out of control. MML has audiobooks available in CD, Playaway, and downloadable formats. You are sure to find a title to mark off your list, while enjoying outdoor activities.
 
Milford Memorial Library: Youth Corner

We had an amazing turnout for Milford Memorial Library’s Spring Coloring Contest. The final number of pictures throughout the four age groups were 193 entries. All of the pictures will be up on our walls and windows for the next couple of weeks.

Summer will be here before we know it, which means our library will have another reading program with this year’s theme, Find Your Voice! We will have Building Bookworms, Minds in Motion, Read with Miss Becca, and an interactive reading-activity bookmark.
