On Wednesday, January 3, at 5:30 p.m., an open meeting of the Board of Trustees for the Milford Memorial Library will take place in the Milford Community Center. The agenda will be posted on MML’s website and front bulletin board at least 24 hours in advance of the meeting. Everyone is welcome to attend and offer their thoughts in order to make MML a better library.
 
Tuesday, January 9, through Friday, January 19, fourth through twelfth graders can take part in MML’s Young Adult Snow Challenge. For this YA Challenge you will be creating a giant paper bag snowflake and building a wood block snow. This is a free activity, but does require registration. Young Adults may register by calling MML at 712-338-4643 or by going to our website at www.milford.lib.ia.us.
On Tuesday, January 16, at 1:00 p.m., the Milford Memorial Library Book Club will be meeting for discussion of Homecoming by Kate Morton. Any interested individuals are welcome to attend. It is not necessary to attend all of the book meetings, and you can come and go as you please.
 
Wednesday, January 17, is Open Craft Night! This Adult Craft Night will be a kit only event. Participants will be able to sign-up for available crafts including a Painted Popsicle Sign, Wood Wick Flower Candle, Stained Glass Votive, Live Evergreen Centerpiece, Clay Jewelry, Book Clock, and Foam Snowman. The cost is $5.00 per kit and registration is required. You can register by contacting the Milford Memorial Library or by going to http://milfordlibrary.weebly.com/adult-program-registration.html.
 
Start the new year off with a debut author from 2023. MML recommends Weyward by Emilia Hart, The September House by Carissa Orlando, Looking for Jane by Heather Marshall, Pineapple Street by Jenny Jackson, The Bandit Queens by Parini Shroff, and Beyond That, The Sea by Laura Spence-Ash. Milford Memorial Library is excited for the new year, 2024. We always have great programming for the kiddos and families. Building Bookworms is a storytime with books, movement, and craft. Minds in Motion is a sensory playdate with a variety of thinking and touching items. Afterschool Adventures is a creative and interactive time with projects or games. Please take note of the following youth related programs in January.

Milford Memorial Library will be closed on Saturday, December 30, through Monday, January 1, for the New Year’s Holiday. We look forward to seeing everyone when we reopen on Tuesday, January 2, at 9:30 am.

Whether the next couple of weeks you find yourself traveling or staying cozy at home, MML has materials to make the experience more enjoyable. For those running from here to there, browse our Playaway and audiobook selections or try to escape the passenger seat with a good book.  For those homebodies, we have puzzles, magazines, and books that pair with a warm drink while finding comfortable spot. Both can agree our movie selection is a great way to calm the noise and relax during this crazy week.
 
Need a document scanned, faxed, printed, or copied? MML can help you.  Documents can be scanned to an email for free. Faxing costs $3.00 for the first 2 pages and then $0.50 for each additional page.  Printing and copying per page are $0.25 for black and white and $0.50 for color. You are able to send printing by email to [email protected]. MML does have the capability for you to print from your phone. Stop in and see us to try out this service.

As we head into the new year remember Milford Memorial Library’s drive-up window is available for patrons to pick up their reserved materials or emailed printing.  To make reserves, you may call the library at 712-338-4643, email [email protected], or go to online catalog at www.milford.lib.ia.us.

Milford Memorial Library is now able to offer the People’s Law Library of Iowa.  This is an online resource about Iowa’s laws on topics like family law, landlord/tenant law, consumer law, and more. This is an easy to use and understand information.  However, the information on the People’s Law Library of Iowa website is not legal advice.  This resource is made possible by the State of Iowa, the University of Iowa Law library, the Iowa Access to Justice Commission, the Iowa Judicial Branch, and the Iowa State Bar Association.Patrons can find the link to this resource at www.peoplelawiowa.org.
 
Milford Memorial Library: Youth News

Happy Holidays and New Year from Milford Memorial Library! Our youth programming is on winter break along with the schools. However, we have a lot planned for January 2024. As always, there will be two Building Bookworms at 10:30 a.m. on Mondays, January 15 (winter) and 29 (books). We will also have two Minds in Motion at 10:30 a.m. on January 8 and 22. Lastly, Afterschool Adventures will be at 3:30 p.m. on January 11 (marble maze). Please get these programs on your calendar so your family is ready to go after the break. Milford Memorial Library would like to thank everyone who joined us for MML’s Holiday Fantasy Open House.  Seeing community members gathered doing crafts and spending time together is something we always enjoy. Santa was excited to hear so many Christmas wishes. Thank you to the Friends of the Milford Library for donating and serving the tasty holiday treats.
 
Join MML’s Book club for a holiday read of A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. With an additional fun BINGO game including prizes. Any interested individuals are welcome to join on Tuesday, December 19, at 1:00 p.m. Copies can be found at Milford Memorial Library. It is not necessary to attend all of the book meetings, and you are welcome to come and go as you please.
 
You are invited to Community Connections the third Thursday of the month at 10:30 a.m. Join us on Thursday, December 21, at 10:30 a.m., at the library. This month’s program is Animal Albinism with Dickinson County Nature Center.  Community Connections is open to adults wanting to learn and socialize. Coffee and refreshments are provided by the Friends of the Milford Library. This is a free program and attendees are encouraged to socialize after presentations. Bring your questions!

Milford Memorial Library is all set up for the holidays. We have beautiful trees, Santa boot prints, book displays, holiday decorations, and more. December’s youth book displays are cookies, Christmas, fun facts, monkeys, and ‘bed’ time. We also have new books, both fiction and non-fiction, arriving at our library several times a month.

Please don’t forget that our library is showing a matinee movie of The Bad Guys at 3:30 p.m. this Thursday, December 14. So get those notes ready for your kiddo’s teachers that day. Join us at 10:30 a.m. on the following Monday, December 18, for a very special Building Bookworms with the talented Miss Allison, who runs the local Kindermusik program.

Milford Memorial Library will be closed on Wednesday, December 6, for Dickinson County Library Staff Development. We will be looking forward to seeing you when we reopen on Thursday, December 7, at 9:30 a.m.
 
This month MML’s Adult Craft Series will have a special guest! Join Ann Williamsen for card making on Wednesday, December 13, at 5:00 p.m., and learn the art of making handcrafted paper cards. Participants will get the chance to work with the different tools Ann has and create their own card. Cost for this program is $5 and registration is required. Friday, December 15, is the last day for the Holiday Fantasy Food Drive. With your help, we can fill the shopping cart for Dickinson County Upper Des Moines with non-perishable food items. Share what you can.

Ho! Ho! Ho! Looks like December and the snow is here! Milford Memorial Library is a great place to warm up while your kiddos explore the youth area. We have new book displays, holiday decorations, toys, STEAM kits, and so much more. We are open daily starting at 9:30 a.m. (except Sunday).

​We have a special Building Bookworms (storytime)at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, December 18, with the talented Kindermusik program. Miss Allison always brings the excitement! Minds in Motion (open play) takes place only once this month at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, December 11.

Then last, but not least, our library is showing a matinee movie (plus popcorn) of The Bad Guys at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, December 14. Spread the word about the youth library programs.
