       Inviting all ghosts, ghouls, goblins, superheroes, and creatures alike! Stop by the Milford Memorial Library on Friday, October 29, from 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., to pick up some treats and show off your awesome costume.

Milford Memorial Library will be closed on Wednesday, November 3, for staff development. We look forward to seeing everyone on Thursday, November 4.
HelpNow by Brainfuse is available at Milford Memorial Library. HelpNow is an online resource provided by the State Library of Iowa. To register an account, go to MML’s website, www.milford.lib.ia.us, and hover over “Use Our Library” and then click “Do Research”. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click on the “Brainfuse HelpNow” icon. Patrons will enter their email and create a password.

HelpNow provides free tutoring sessions from 2:00 p.m. until 11:00 p.m., seven days a week. Tutoring is provided for elementary through college levels in math, science, reading, writing, and social studies.  A session will last for 90 minutes. If a patron needs additional time, they may log into another session with the tutor as soon as time runs out.  The online tutoring classroom is set up with a shared electronic whiteboard and chat box. The whiteboard comes equipped with the appropriate subject tools. For example, a lengthy math equation can be entered with a click.  Files and photos can be uploaded to the chat and whiteboard. For ESL users, language can be changed in your chat box while the tutor’s will be unchanged. When the tutoring session is over, the chat box conversation will be emailed.  Each tutoring session is recorded. Patrons can find recorded sessions stored in the Message Center.

The Send Question feature is useful when patrons cannot meet with a tutor or during off hours. They are able to submit a question and will receive an answer in under 24 hours. 

HelpNow also has a program called Writing Lab. Patrons are able to submit papers and will receive paper suggestions in under 24 hours. It will not edit your paper, but will give suggestions on how it is written and what the writer should be looking at.  When the paper is sent back, user will be able to find it in the Message Center.
There is a Featured Service tab. This is where patrons can find special help with playing chess and FASFA information.

    MML’s book club, the Open Book Discussion Group, invites any interested individuals to come and discus the featured book, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, on Tuesday, October 26, at 1:00 p.m. Copies can be found at the library. It is not necessary to attend all of the meetings, and you are welcome to come and go as you please.

Join us on Tuesday, October 26, at 7:00 p.m., at the Arnolds Park Library, for a fun night of painting, fellowship, and snacks provided by the three local libraries. Any skill level is invited to recreate a painting following step-by-step instruction. All of the supplies will be provided by the libraries. There are only 30 spots available so pre-register at the Arnolds Park Public Library, Spirit Lake Public Library, or the Milford Memorial Library. The cost is $10.00 for early registration and $15 for registration on the day of the event. Registrants will need to pay prior to the event to secure their spot. Subscription Boxes can be picked up at the library.

Stop by the Library during Milford Business Trick or Treat will be held on Friday, October 29, 2:30 p.m.-5:30 p.m. We are looking forward to seeing all the monsters, goblins, and princesses.

   Milford Memorial Library and other Milford businesses will be celebrating Halloween with some trick or treating from 2:30-5:30 p.m. on Friday, October 29.  We are excited to see everyone in their costumes!

November will be upon us soon, so plan to attend some fun youth programs at MML.  There will be three Building Bookworms (storytimes).  They will be at 10:30 a.m. on Mondays, November 1 (Pumpkins), November 15 (Turkeys), and November 29 (Owls).  Miss Becca will also have Afterschool Activity (snow slime) at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, November 11.

HelpNow! is a free online resource provided by the State of Iowa Library. This resource can help all age learners. Study materials are available for a variety of tests ranging from ACT, SAT, GED, ASVAB, U.S Citizenship, and more. Improve your math, reading, and writing skills at any age by playing games and solving puzzles. The best feature is the online one-on-one tutoring.  HelpNow! will even coordinate study sessions for a study group.  HelpNow! links can be found on the Milford Memorial Library website, www.milford.lib.ia.us, and our online card catalog.

Come join a fun game of Halloween BINGO at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 14, at Milford Memorial Library.  Every kiddo will get to leave with a simple prize.  Then at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, October 18, Miss Becca will have another Building Bookworms (storytime).  The theme will be Halloween, and the craft will be a paper handprint ghost.  Lastly, get those Halloween costumes ready for trick or treat with Milford businesses from 2:30-5:30 p.m. on Friday, October 29.

MML’s Adult Craft series will be creating Halloween Ribbon Wreaths on Wednesday, October 13th, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., at Milford Memorial Library. This craft also comes in kit form. The kit will include: ribbon, pipe cleaner, metal hoop, and instructions. The cost for this craft is $5.00 and registration is required. Join us on Wednesday, October 13th, at 6:00 p.m., for Mysterious Creatures of the Midwest presented by Chad Lewis. In this presentation, researcher Chad Lewis will showcase his on-site investigations ranging from the Bigfoot of the North Woods and the Lake Monster of Lake Pepin to Phantom Chickens and Hellhounds roaming rural Iowa. Filled with witness drawings, eye-witness testimony, weird photos, and bizarre sound clips. This presentation brings the investigation right to you! This program is available via Zoom from anywhere you wish, or watch Chad's presentation on the big screen at the Milford Community Center. This program is brought to you by the Friends of the Estherville Public Library and the Friends of Milford Memorial Library.
 
October is a time filled with tricks and treats. Fourth through twelfth graders will have people guessing what is safe to eat with D.I.Y faux cupcakes and Kitty Litter Cake recipe. They might trick a Halloween monster with D.I.Y fake giant popcorn. These spooky sweet tricksters may enjoy the included and carefully crafted playlist, reading list, and watch list. This will take place at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 14, at the library. Kids will be able to win some simple prizes by playing the game. The second program is Building Bookworms (storytime): Halloween. This will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, October 18, at MML. Kids will be a part of the storytime, and then make a handprint ghost for the craft. Both of these programs are free and require no registration.
