As summer is coming-to-an-end, we would like to thank everyone for an incredible Summer Reading Program at Milford Memorial Library. We would not be able to create such amazing activities and events without the support of our community, Friends of the Milford Memorial Library group, local businesses, volunteers, and participants. We are eager about next summer, but keep a lookout for MML’s year-round library events and activities for all ages.
Our Assistant Director, Paige, would like to thank all of the young adults who came to took part in MML’s Young Adults Summer Reading program. We had 106 young adults registered for the summer reading program.  The young adults read 4,995 minutes this summer.  Congratulations to first place winner, Brianna Swenson, second place winner, William Anderson, and third place winner, Roman Coates. Paige would like to thank the Friends of the Milford Memorial Library and area businesses for helping make the Young Adult Summer Reading program such a success.
Join area libraries for Paint Night on Wednesday, August 28, at 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., at Arnolds Park Library. All supplies will be provided by the libraries. Pre-registration at the Arnolds Park Public Library, Spirit Lake Public library, or the Milford Memorial Library. The cost is $10.00 for early registration and $15 for registration on the day of the event.
 
An open meeting of the Board of Trustees for the Milford Memorial Library is at 5:30 p.m., on Wednesday, September 4, in the Milford Community Center. The agenda will be posted on MML’s website and front bulletin board at least 24 hours in advance of the meeting.

Please don’t forget Milford Memorial Library as you ease back into your school routine.  Miss Becca has three programs planned for the kiddos, so please add these September dates and times to your calendar:
- Afterschool Activity-Tower Building: Thursday, September 12, at 3:30 P.M.
- Public Playdate: Wednesday, September 18, at 5:30 P.M.
- Building Bookworms- Alphabet Fun: Monday, September 23, at 10:30 A.MMilford Memorial Library:

​On Wednesday, August 21, at 5:30 p.m., harness power from the sun to illuminate your favorite outdoor area. Director, Gillian Anderson, will guide you in building a solar powered light for your yard. All of the supplies will be provided by the library, and participants can take everything they make home. Pre-registration is required with the cost of the activity being $5.00.
Kevin Wood will bring Abraham Lincoln to life at the Milford Memorial Library on Tuesday, August 27, at 2:00 p.m. with his program titled “A New Birth of Freedom.” This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Milford Memorial Library, Friends of the Spirit Lake Public Library, and the Friends of the Arnolds Park Public Library.

Thank you to all of the youth, families, daycares, and supporters (businesses and grants) of Milford Memorial Library’s 2019 Youth Summer Reading Program!  We had a jam packed summer full of celebrations, programs, local presenters, playdates, storytimes, and partner reading.  Of course, there were plenty of incentives to go around for those kiddos who put the time and effort in on their Reading Logs.  MANY, MANY THANKS TO YOU ALL!

Miss Becca will be back to regular youth programming of Public Playdates, Afterschool Activity, 4-H Clover Kids, and Building Bookworms starting in September.  Stay tuned! 

Milford Memorial Library News

Wednesday, August 14, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., test your space knowledge at MML. Categories will range from facts to science fiction. This is a free event, however, pre-registration is required. Registration must be done in teams of 2 through 6. All materials will be provided by the library.

Any interested individuals are welcome to join MML's Book Club on Tuesday, August 20, at 1:00 p.m. The featured book in August is The Great Alone by Kristian Hannah. Copies of this book can be found in our library along with other local area book clubs.  It is not necessary to attend all of the book club meetings, and you are welcome to come and go as you please.

Youth and Young Adult Summer Reading Logs will be due on Friday, August 16, at 5:00 p.m. Announcements of winners will be made shortly after.

Milford Memorial Library has its last week of summer programming on Friday, August 16.  It will be a day full of fun with Book Buddies at 9:30 a.m., Building Bookworms: A Sky Full of Stories (Q-Tip Star Art and Constellation Sensory Bags) at 10:00 a.m., and all day to turn in your Reading Logs for prizes and coupons.
Normal monthly youth programming will start back in September, so please stay tuned to MML’s website and social media. 

Milford Memorial Library News

Join the Milford Memorial Library as we welcome Pete Grady on Thursday, August 8, at 2:00 p.m. Grady will be presenting “Unconditional Surrender: A Visit with Ulysses S. Grant.” The performance focuses on Grant’s experiences as President and Lieutenant General of the United States Army, but it also touches Grant’s childhood in Ohio, his military service in the Mexican War and his resignation from the U.S. Army and subsequent attempts to support his family as a civilian. The show is presented as Grant, in the final weeks of his life, struggles to complete his autobiography before his death from cancer of the throat in July 1885. The performance features mentions of Iowa’s special contributions to the Union cause, and includes a discussion of the effect of the Mexican War on the map of Iowa. This program is brought to you by the Friends of the Milford Memorial Library and a grant from Humanities Iowa.

 Summer is winding down, but Milford Memorial Library still has some exciting youth programs for your family.  Everything is provided by the library, and they are open to all ages.  Also, a friendly reminder that Reading Logs can still be turned in for summer prizes until Friday, August 16.
The last summer Public Playdate will be at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, August 12.  There are two summer Building Bookworms left, and they are the Dickinson County Nature Center at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, August 9, and A Sky Full of Stories (Q-Tip Star Art and Constellation Sensory Bags) with Miss Becca at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, August 16.
