Join us on Monday, October 4, at 2:00 p.m. for Lincoln on the Gettysburg Address. The audience will enjoy hearing a first-hand account from Abraham Lincoln himself of the genesis and development of his famous speech. He provides background and context to the familiar phrases, from “Four score and seven years ago” to “government of the people, by the people, for the people”, and many more in between. He explains how he wrote his speeches, thus debunking a common myth about when and how he wrote this, his most famous, one. In fact, the audience will essentially witness him create his speech over the period of the program before their very eyes. This free program is sponsored by the Friends of the Milford Memorial Library, Friends of the Spirit Lake Library, and Friends of the Arnolds Park Library.

Author Keith Luchtel will be at the Milford Memorial Library on Friday, September 30, at 6:30 p.m. to discuss his book, Milford Male. Keith’s story tells about how his values guided him from small town Iowa to becoming an Air Force Officer, Combat Pilot, Special Operator, Attorney, Lobbyist, Regulator, and Political Consultant.
 
On Wednesday, October 6, an open meeting of the Board of Trustees for the Milford Memorial Library will take place in the Milford Community Center. The agenda will be posted on MML’s website and front bulletin board at least 24 hours in advance of the meeting. Everyone is welcome to attend and offer their thoughts in order to make MML a better library.
 
Join us on Wednesday, October 13th, at 6:00 p.m., for Mysterious Creatures of the Midwest presented by Chad Lewis. In this presentation, researcher Chad Lewis will showcase his on-site investigations ranging from the Bigfoot of the North Woods and the Lake Monster of Lake Pepin to Phantom Chickens and Hellhounds roaming rural Iowa. Filled with witness drawings, eye-witness testimony, weird photos, and bizarre sound clips. This presentation brings the investigation right to you! This program is available via Zoom from anywhere you wish, or watch Chad's presentation on the big screen at the Milford Community Center. This program is brought to you by the Friends of the Estherville Public Library and the Friends of Milford Memorial Library.

On Tuesday, September 28, at 7:00 p.m., at the Arnolds Park Library, join us for a fun night of painting, fellowship, and snacks provided by the three local libraries. Any skill level is invited to recreate a painting following step-by-step instructions. All of the supplies will be provided by the libraries. Pre-register at the Arnolds Park Public Library, Spirit Lake Public Library, or the Milford Memorial Library. The cost is $10.00 for early registration and $15 for registration on the day of the event. Registrants will need to pay prior to the event to secure their spot. Milford Memorial Library’s Young Adult Subscription Box: Power Up will be ending on Friday, September 24. Young Adults will be making DIY free weights and creating an exercise routine with DIY workout cards. A playlist, reading list, watch list, and a recipe are also included. This is a free program, but registration is required. Register by calling (712) 338-4643 or by emailing [email protected]. Subscription Boxes can be picked up at the library.
 
Have a student trying to achieve reading goals? Located in MML’s catalog, milford.biblionix.com/catalog/, patrons can search for Accelerated Reader points and reading levels by clicking “More Search Options”. Click the dropdown list labeled “Keywords” and select “Accelerated Reader”. Patrons can fill in point and reading level range. Once completed click “Search” and results will load. Titles can be found physically at MML or by downloading from Bridges. Patrons with a specific title may look up the point and reading level by going to MML’s website, www.milford.lib.ia.us. Located on the left-hand side hover over “Use Our Library” and click “Do Research”. A new page will load, click on “Accelerated Reader List” icon. A new tab will open and patrons can input the title into the “Quick Search” bar and click “Search”.
 
Milford Memorial Library: Youth Corner
 
Milford Memorial Library had its first two programs of the fall. The first one was chalk art, and the second one was Miss Iowa 2021. All of the kids had a great time making their own designs with chalk, as well as meeting a real life “princess.” Keep an eye out for information about the new 4-H Clover Kids. Registration will be open soon with the first program taking place at 3:30 p.m. on Monday, September 27.

Iowa Holocaust Council member and educator, Brad Wilkening, will be presenting Lessons of the Holocaust at Milford Memorial Library on Thursday, September 16, at 2:00 p.m. Wilkening’s presentation focuses on how lessons learned from the Holocaust are still relevant and can be applied in today’s world. His goal is to teach people that they need to create a safer and more caring environment. This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Milford Library, Friends of the Spirit Lake Public Library, and Friends of the Arnolds Park Public Library.

Thursday, September 16, at 2:00 p.m., join member of the Iowa Holocaust Council and educator Brad Wilkening as he presents Lessons of the Holocaust at the Milford Memorial Library. Milford Memorial Library’s Adult Craft Series is Back! Join us on Wednesday, September 16, from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. for Live Succulent Art. This craft is also available in kit form. All participants will receive succulents, a frame, dirt, and instructions. The cost for this craft is $5 and registration is required. You can register by contacting the Milford Memorial Library or online by going to http://milfordlibrary.weebly.com/adult-program-registration.html.
 
Brainfuse HelpNow now is free online homework help. Kindergarteners through adult learners can find learning exercises, studying strategies, and test prep. Want a live person to explain problems versus attempting to figure it out by reading on a screen? Try the Live Tutoring. The Brainfuse HelpNow resource can be accessed by going to the MML’s webpage, milford.lib.ia.us, on the side bar hover over “Use Our Library” and click “Do Research”. Next scroll to the bottom of the page and click on the icon “Brainfuse HelpNow”. This will open up a new tab and the Brainfuse HelpNow homepage will be displayed. Login in using your library card.
 
Milford Memorial Library’s Young Adult Subscription Box is back with Power Up in September. This box will get you moving and looking at healthy habits. You will be making your own free weights and creating an exercise routine with DIY workout cards. Recipes will help you before and after your workout. A motivational playlist, lists of inspirational books, and media to watch are included in the box. This active box begins on Tuesday, September 13, and runs through Friday, September 24.
