Fourth through twelfth graders are invited to join Milford Memorial Library and Arnolds Park Library on Monday, November 13, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., at Milford Memorial Library, for a Young Adults’ Game Day. We will have a variety of multiplayer video games available for you and your friends to play. Consoles and games are being provided by Exile Gaming. This is a free program and registration is not required.
 
In MML’s Young Adult November Challenge Box, fourth through twelfth graders will be creating a game with yarn pumpkins and black licorice. The game will be travel friendly and all ages will be able to play and understand the rules.  The November Challenge box will be available Tuesday, November 14, through Tuesday, November 21. This month MML’s Adult Craft Series will have a special guest! Join Ann Williamsen for card making on Wednesday, November 15, at 5:00 p.m., and learn the art of making handcrafted paper cards. Participants will get the chance to work with the different tools Ann has and create their own card. Cost for this program is $5 and registration is required. Join MML's Book Club on Tuesday, November 21, at 1:00 p.m. The featured book, Beartown by Fredrik, can be found in our library. It is not necessary to attend all of the meetings, and you are welcome to come and go as you please.
 
Start planning now for your entry into the Festival of Trees. Milford Memorial Library will be accepting trees from Friday, November 17 through Friday, December 1.

Inviting all ghosts, ghouls, goblins, superheroes, and creatures alike! Stop by the Milford Memorial Library on Tuesday, October 31, from 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., to pick up some treats and show off your awesome costume as part of Trick-or-Treat with Milford Businesses.

Everyone is welcome to join us on Wednesday, November 1, for several great programs. Kathy Wilson will be at the Arnolds Park Library at 2:00 p.m., for We Shall Be Monsters. Kathy will tell how despite people questioning her morals, her husband’s philandering, and death of loved ones, Mary Shelly was still able to write one of the most popular novels of all time while she was still a teenager. This program looks at Mary Shelly’s life to learn more about her and understand why the fascination with “Frankenstein” continues. This free program is sponsored by the Arnolds Park Library Foundation, Friends of the Milford Library, and Friends of the Spirit Lake Library.
 
Halloween continues at the Spirit Lake Public Library on Wednesday, November 1, at 7:00 p.m., for The Devil Has My Consent program. Kathy Wilson will guide us through 1692, where more than 200 people were accused of witchcraft in Salem, Massachusetts; 20 were executed. Why? What happened to create such hysteria? Were the accusers possessed? Experiencing delusions caused by eating spoiled grain? Discover the real story behind the Salem Witch Trials. This is a free program and everyone is invited to attend.  This program is sponsored by Arnolds Park Library Foundation, Friends of the Milford Library, and Friends of the Spirit Lake Library.

Milford Memorial Library Youth News

Finish out October with your family and Milford Memorial Library through Building Bookworms (storytime) at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, October 30, with the theme being monsters. Then join the town of Milford from 3:30-5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 31, for some trick-or-treating. Keep an eye out for the pumpkin hanging in their window. We have some free items out on the front table. There are posters and Halloween decorative bags. Plus the jack-olantern riddle is still waiting to be solved by your kiddos. November is right around the corner, so please mark these programs to get on your calendar. Minds in Motion (sensory play) is at 10:30 a.m. on Mondays, November 6 and 20, Building Bookworms (storytime) is at 10:30 a.m. on Mondays, November 13 and 27, and Afterschool Adventures is at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, November 9.

Join us on Tuesday, October 24, at 7:00 p.m., at the Arnolds Park Library, for a fun night of painting, fellowship, and snacks provided by the three local libraries. This month we will be painting a doormat. Participants will get to choose from several paint options. All of the supplies will be provided by the libraries. There are only 30 spots available so pre-register at the Arnolds Park Public Library, Spirit Lake Public Library, or the Milford Memorial Library. The cost is $15 for registration. Stop by Milford Memorial Library during October for some Halloween fun with our Pumpkin Letter Scavenger Hunt. Grab a riddle paper by the front desk, and then go searching for different numbers/letters throughout the youth area. Just a friendly reminder that this is all for fun with no prizes. Miss Becca still has two youth programs left in October. Minds in Motion (sensory play) is at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, October 23. The following Monday is Building Bookworms: Monsters (storytime). It will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, October 30. Lastly, don’t forget we have Trick-or-Treat with Milford businesses from 3:30-5:30 p.m. on Halloween (Tuesday, October 31). Stop by for some candy with Miss Gillian, Miss Paige, and Miss Becca.

Milford Memorial Library is partnering with ISU Extension and Outreach Dickinson County for these Preserve the Taste of Summer Workshops! On October 18, at 5 p.m., join us for Jam Making and Dehydrating. You’ll learn safe methods to preserve jams and dehydrate foods in this “jam” session and take home the fruit of your labors. This class is free for participants.  Register contact ISU Extension and Outreach Dickinson County, at 712-336-3438, for more information.
 
On Tuesday, October 17, at 1:00 p.m., join MML’s Open Book Discussion Group to discuss the featured book Frankenstein by Mary Shelly. Copies can be found at the library. It is not necessary to attend all of the meetings, and you are welcome to come and go as you please.

This month Erin Reed from Dickinson County Trails will join us.  Community Connections is open to adults wanting to learn and socialize. Have you visited the Milford Memorial Library lately? Well, your family must hurry to see what was left behind by colorful monster. Here is a clue, they are markings made by feet! Follow these special marks to the youth area where your whole family can pick out some books from the October displays. This month includes Karma Wilson, Halloween, pink books (Breast Cancer Awareness Month), wolves (Wolf Awareness Week), and mental health (Mental Health Day). Then while the kiddos search for pumpkin letters in order to answer a funny joke, the colorful monster expects the adults to grab a Programming Calendar (pssst, they are on the front desk). Here are two programs for the kiddos: Afterschool Adventures (Halloween BINGO) at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 12, and Building Bookworms (Fire Safety; edible fire truck) at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, October 16.

Welcome to October library friends! We have new book displays, decorations, and youth programs. The librarians are so excited to see your faces! Please mark us down on your calendar for Building Bookworms (storytime), Afterschool Adventures (small group fun), and Minds in Motion (sensory play). Building Bookworms is at 10:30 a.m. on Mondays, October 16 (fire safety) and 30 (monsters), Afterschool Adventures is at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 12 (Halloween BINGO), and Minds in Motion is at 10:30 a.m. on Mondays, October 2 and 23.
​Also this month, Miss Becca is starting various library visits from Head Start through 2nd Grade and spreading library love to four local daycares. For those families who registered for Clover Kids, it begins at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 17 and Thursday, October 19.
