2017 Children’s Summer Reading Program

The 2017 Summer Reading Program theme is “Build a Better World.” The SRP begins Tuesday, June 6, and continues for five Tuesdays through June 27. Each session lasts approximately one hour. Readers of all ages will discover ways to “Build a Better World.”

Who can attend?
We welcome all preschool through 4th grade children of all abilities and all programs are free of charge. Adults are invited to attend with the children.

Tuesday, June 13 @ 10:00 a.m. – Richard Brammer presents                                                                      
“Absolute Science”.  
Exciting unbelieveable science projects.
You will be amazed when you see what happens!

Tuesday, June 20 @ 10:00 a.m. – Bryanna Kuhlman, Dickinson County Nature Center
“Nurture Our Nature.”
Hands-on engaging experience with live animals and interesting nature facts.

Tuesday, June 27 @ 10:00 a.m. – Jester Puppets presents
“Iowa Jones and the Search for the Last Mummy”.
Humor, fun and interaction with the kids.

Reading Incentives
Children are encouraged to choose books appropriate for their age and fill out tokens for books they have read or books that have been read to them. Tokens are drawn each week for prizes so be sure to turn them in! Using the Reading Log to list the books read each week and watching it grow throughout the summer gives each child a sense of accomplishment. Our goals are to encourage children to use the library, motivate them to read and maintain their reading skills during summer vacation.

Registration
If you haven’t registered, stop by the library to pick up a form or print one off from our website http://www.milford.lib.ia.us. Pre-registration is encouraged and enables us to plan more effectively, but everyone is encouraged to bring friends and family whether they have registered or not.

If you are in 3rd or 4th grade and you like to create with your hands and use your brain, the Constructors Club is for you! We’ll have fun while constructing something different each month. Come to the library Saturday, May 20, at 11:00 a.m., and prepare to make a Jungle in a Jar. Don’t forget to bring your thinking cap! There is no cost and all materials are provided by the library.
 
Area libraries are sponsoring Paint Night at the Library in May! Join area libraries on Tuesday, May 23, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., at Arnolds Park Library for a fun night of painting, community, and snacks! There are only are only 30 spots available for this painting class. The cost for early registration is $7.50 and registration the day of the event is $15. Those interested can register at the Arnolds Park Public Library, Spirit Lake Public Library, and the Milford Memorial Library. Attendees of any skill level are invited to recreate a beautiful painting by following step-by-step instructions from the artist who created the original painting. Participants will be painting on a 16 x 20 canvas and all the supplies are provided by the libraries. Mark your calendars for Paint Night at the Library! Sponsored by Arnolds Park Library, Spirit Lake Public Library, and Milford Memorial Library.
 
Milford Memorial Library will be closed on Monday, May 29, for Memorial Day.

The Milford Memorial Library Adult Craft Series is back! Join MML director Beth Sorenson for "Garden Stakes" on Wednesday, May 10, from 5:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m., at the library. Registration for this event is required and the cost to participate is $2. Contact the library for more information.

Join your fellow volunteers for May Spring Cleaning at the library. Beginning at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday May 11, we will spend 45 minutes dusting the library shelves. Coffee and goodies will be served following the dusting then we will play 3 rounds of bingo for some fabulous prizes. Bring a friend and get an extra free space on your card.

If you are in preschool through 4th grade and need something to do after school on Thursday, March 9, stop by the library. Join Betty Naab, our children’s librarian, as she hosts the after school craft party. The theme this month is "May Flowers."

Join Jeff Cookinham Wednesday, May 3, at 6:30 p.m. for a presentation on computer scamming. He will be talking about different scams and how to avoid them. Computer scams have become more widespread recently and scammers are always looking for new ways to get your information. Cookinham will be happy to answer any questions you may have about different computer scams.

Milford Memorial Library is excited to announce that Caroline Perkins and her dog, Hank, will be available to listen to stories Saturday, May 6, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.! Caroline and Hank are a therapy dog team, licensed by the Pet Partners Therapy Animal Program. In the past they worked for 5 years in Cable, WI, as part of the Reading Education Assistance Dogs (R.E.A.D) program. Prior to the R.E.A.D. program Caroline was a Special Education Teacher. Hank is a great listener and loves to listen to all kinds of stories. Children who are beginner readers or just want a chance to improve on reading aloud are encouraged to come read to Hank. Children can read to Hank on a first come, first serve basis. The amount of time a child will get to read to Hank is determined by the length of the book, child’s reading level, and the number of children waiting to read to Hank.

Join Presenter Brad Wilkening as he talks about Lessons of the Holocaust on Monday, May 8, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Milford Memorial Library. "Bullying and indifference start at an early age, and we have a responsibility to help create a safer more caring environment.  We need to be up standers and not bystanders in the face of evil.  My goal is to keep the lessons of the holocaust alive," said Wilkening. He will give a presentation about how he got interested in the Holocaust, show a short video of him talking with a Holocaust survivor, and have a time to answer questions.
