Milford Memorial Library will be closed on Friday, December 31, and Saturday, January 1, in observance of the New Year’s holiday. The library will be open on Monday, January 3, at 9:30 a.m. We wish you a safe and fun holiday weekend.
 
Thank you to all of our patrons whom donated food to Dickinson County Upper Des Moines Food Pantry. Because of your generosity, Dickinson County Upper Des Moines will be able to assist more families.
 
On Wednesday, December 3, at 5:30 p.m., an open meeting of the Board of Trustees for the Milford Memorial Library will take place in the Milford Community Center. The agenda will be posted on MML’s website and front bulletin board 24 hours in advance of the meeting. Everyone is welcome to attend and offer their thoughts in order to make MML a better library.
 
Celebrate Iowa’s 175th Birthday, on December 28, with help from MML! Our Iowa collection includes, books, authors, movies, magazines, and the Iowa and local history section. Make sure to look at our cake pans; because what is a birthday without a cake?

Please plan to stop by Milford Memorial Library throughout January 2022. Miss Becca will have three Building Bookworms at 10:30 a.m. on the following Mondays: January 3 (theme: bears), January 17 (theme: snowmen), and January 31 (theme: penguins). There will be stories, songs/rhymes, coloring/activity sheets, and a simple craft. It is open to all ages and abilities. Afterschool Activity will be at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 13, with the activity being air dry clay. This program is ideal for all abilities of Preschool-4 th Grade youth.

Friday, December 23, is the last day for MML’s Young Adult Subscription Box: Let’s Build a Snowman. Fourth through twelfth graders may register for this free activity box by calling 712-338-4643 or by registering online at http://milfordlibrary.weebly.com/ya-subscription-box-registratoin.html.

Stay warm and cozy while completing a puzzle borrowed from MML. We have puzzles ranging from 300 pieces to over 1,000 pieces. Patrons may come and browse the puzzle catalogue or by calling 712-338-4643 and letting MML staff know what type of puzzle they would like.  Puzzles may be checked out and picked up at the MML circulation desk or at the drive-up window during normal operating hours.
 
Want to add a little more fun to your winter holiday events? Try one of MML’s cake pans and cake pop molds. We have choices of a candy cane, star, Rudolph, standup snowman, and gingerbread kid along with other favorite hobbies and characters. Cake pans can be borrowed for three days. Patrons may reserve online or by calling 712-338-4643. Cake pans need to be picked up and returned at the circulation desk.

Milford Memorial Library welcomes all families in the new year with a busy month of youth programming.  There will be three Building Bookworms in January 2022.  All of them are at 10:30 a.m. on the following Mondays: January 3 (theme: bears, craft: mosaic paper bear), January 17 (theme: snowmen, craft: cotton ball snowman), and January 31 (theme: penguins, craft: handprint penguin).  There will also be an Afterschool Activity at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 13.  The activity will be free time with air dry clay.  Please mark these dates on your calendar as MML and Miss Becca would love to see your family.

Milford Memorial Library News

During Holiday Fantasy, adults were able to talk and watch as the kids proudly displayed their Christmas crafts and visited with Santa. Everyone enjoyed delicious treats and drinks provided by the Friends of the Milford Memorial Library, while they voted for their favorite trees. Thank you to everyone who joined us in celebrating the beginning of the holiday season.
 
Friday, December 17, is the last day MML will be collecting non-perishable food items for the Dickinson County Upper Des Moines Food Pantry. Please help us fill up the grocery cart by bringing in your donation during open hours.
 
MML’s book club, the Open Book Discussion Group, invites any interested individuals to come and discuss the featured book, The Dutch House by Ann Patchett, on Tuesday, December 21, at 1:00 p.m. Copies can be found at the library. It is not necessary to attend all of the meetings, and you are welcome to come and go as you please.

A reading list, watch list, play list, and a recipe are added little flakes of fun. The Subscription Box is free, but registration is required. As the weather starts getting cold and snowy and your car is comfy cozy, remember you may pick up your reserved library materials at MML’s drive-up window. The drive-up window is located on the east side of the building, closest to Hwy 71, and a call button is located to the side of the drawer. This will alert staff and someone will be over to help you.
 
Making a homemade gift, which requires some printing? MML can help you! We can make copies or print materials for your project. Normal printing prices apply ($0.25 for black and white per page and $0.50 for color per page).

Stop by Milford Memorial Library and check out the different December youth book displays. The displays include: Elephant and Piggie, American Sign Language, holidays, seasons/weather, and Mary Meinking. There are lots of books to choose from, and they are perfect for snuggling up at home.

Wednesday, December 15, is Open Craft Night! This Adult Craft Night will be a kit only event. Participants will be able to sign-up for available crafts including Halloween Ribbon Wreath, Fabric Pumpkins, Lavender Soap, Celebration Plate, Painted Popsicle Sign, Epoxy Wood Board, Painted Okoboji Tote, Wood Wick Flower Candle, and Painted Caterpillar Pavers. The cost is $5.00 per kit and registration is required. You can register by contacting the Milford Memorial Library or by going to http://milfordlibrary.weebly.com/adult-program-registration.html.

Book it to the food drive! Help fill up the grocery cart for Dickinson County Upper Des Moines by bringing in non-perishable food items to the Milford Memorial Library. We will be collecting items ­­­­­until Friday, December 17.
 
We are excited to announce the Milford Memorial Library now has four hotspots available for members to check out. These hotspots provide wireless internet access to the user. Three of the four hotspots at the Milford Memorial Library were provided by a grant received from the Okoboji Foundation Youth in Philanthropy and the fourth hotspot is generously sponsored by the Friends of the Milford Memorial Library. Hotspots can be checked out for a seven-day period with one renewal. After that they will need to be brought back to the library. There is a charge of $1 per day the hotspot is late. It will be shut off if it is lost or not returned and the patron will be charged for the hotspot. There are other charges for lost items related to the hotspots. Only one hotspot can be checked out per family. These devices are great for streaming/entertainment, work/business, school, travel/vacation, and events being hosted in the area. Each hotspot can provide internet to 15 devices at once. Contact the Milford Memorial Library to check out a hotspot or for more information.

Milford Memorial Library has two youth programs in December.  The first program will be Afterschool Activity, and it will be at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, December 9.  The activity will be iron on beads.  The second program will be Building Bookworms at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, December 13.  The theme will be holidays, and the craft will be a jingle bell noisemaker.  All December youth programs are free, require no registration, and all materials are provided by the library.
