On Monday, September 6, Milford Memorial Library will be closed in observance of Labor Day. We look forward to seeing everyone on Tuesday, September 7, at 9:30 a.m.  Have a happy and safe weekend.
 
On Wednesday, September 1, an open meeting of the Board of Trustees for the Milford Memorial Library will take place in the Milford Community Center. The agenda will be posted on MML’s website and front bulletin board at least 24 hours in advance of the meeting. Everyone is welcome to attend and offer their thoughts in order to make MML a better library
 
Milford Memorial Library’s Young Adult Subscription Box is back with Power Up in September. This box will get you moving and looking at healthy habits. You will be making your own free weights and creating your own exercise routine with DIY workout cards. Recipes will help you before and after your work out, a motivational playlist, and lists of inspirational books and media to watch are included in the box. This active box begins on Tuesday, September 13, and runs through Friday, September 24. This is a free program, but registration is required. Young adults may register by calling (712) 338-4643 or by emailing [email protected]. Subscription Boxes maybe picked up at the library.
 
Harvest and canning season is right around the corner. MML has books and magazines to help you preserve your hard work. Search our online catalog for canning, preserving, and drying. For a more detailed search, click the “Refine Search” tab on the left-hand side of the catalog. Then select “Adult Non-fiction” in the drop-down menu next to the heading Secondary Type. If you would like titles physically at MML select “Not Downloadable” in the drop-down menu next to the heading Downloadable. 

Milford Memorial Library: Youth Corner
 
Milford Memorial Library and Miss Becca are getting ready for some fall youth programming.  Each month there will be Building Bookworms (storytime) every other Monday, as well as Afterschool Activity being on the second Thursday.  Here is what MML has planned so far in September.  At 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 9, we will be doing chalk art in the east parking lot.  Then at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, September 20, the storytime theme will be colors with the craft being a mosaic paper chameleon.  We also plan to have Miss Iowa 2021, Grace Keller, put on a special storytime in September, but we are waiting to confirm that date and time.  Please stay tuned for more information with our website (http://www.milford.lib.ia.us) or our Facebook page (@milfordlibrary).

With activities changing over from summer and vacations to fall and school, you may not think you have time for a good book. Milford Memorial Library has portable audiobooks called Playaways. A Playaway is an all in one audiobook. Patrons can enjoy listening through headphones or by an auxiliary (AUX) cord in their vehicle.  Playaways are easily be portable for exercising, doing chores, and traveling to activities. Unlike CD audiobooks, Playaways will hold your spot after being turned off. MML has Playaways available for all ages. Try one of these reading alternatives today. See available titles on MML’s online catalog by searching Playaways in the search box. A Playaway check-out period is (2 weeks) the same as printed materials.
 
Have activity schedules you need to keep clean MML is able to help you protect them. Lamination costs are $0.50 for a credit card size and a $1.00 for an 8.5”x11” sheet of paper.
 
Save time by picking up your library materials at MML’s drive-up window. Drive-up hours are every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday from 9:30 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. and Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. until 6:30 p.m.  The location of the drive-up window is on the east side of the library, closest to Highway 71.
 
We offer printing and copying for black and white ink is $0.25 a side and color is $.0.50 a side. Faxing is $3.00 for the first two pages and $0.50 for every page after that. We are able to scan documents to emails and this is free of charge.
 
Milford Memorial Library: Youth Corner
 
Milford Memorial Library had the honor of being a part of the Okoboji Blue Water Festival a couple weeks ago.  Miss Becca had about 20 kids and 10 adults show up to be a part of the clean water and environment storytime.  We read two stories, sang a song about the lake, and made a cute paper fish windsock craft.  The day was beautiful, and everyone had a good time learning about how to take care of our Earth.  Thank you to all of the families who came to the storytime, as well as the Okoboji Blue Water Festival group for inviting MML.

​Milford Memorial Library: Youth Corner
 
Milford Memorial Library had a busy summer with the kids. There was something going on each day of the week throughout June and July. The programs included Facebook Fun, Sidewalk Shenanigans, large and small performers, storytimes, Grab and Go Bags, and two celebratory parties. The Youth Summer Reading Program had 35 supporters which involved grants, local businesses, and the city of Milford. There were 48 youth registered with 23 of them completing a reading-activity log and earning a SRP yard sign and prizes. Over 300 craft bags were given out to the families each week on the theme of primary colors. Thank you again to everyone who helped make the 2021 Youth Summer Reading Program a success.

     Congratulations to everyone who completed the 2021 Adult Summer Reading Program! We have enjoyed seeing the titles you chose and activities you completed. The Adult Craft Series program and the Paint Night at the Library program were also part of summer reading and we enjoyed crafting and painting with you. Both of these adult programs will be taking a break in August, but will be back in September. In the meantime, you can sign up for our adult programming newsletter at http://milfordlibrary.weebly.com/adult-program-registration.html. This newsletter is sent out once a month and recipients will get the first look at upcoming programming, new books, and some behind the scenes information.
 
MML’s Young Adult Summer Reading Program has ended for another year. We had 18 Young Adults register and did an amazing job of earning 9,655 points by reading and completing a variety of tasks in 60 days.
Our top readers for MML’s 2021 Young Adult Summer Reading Program are: Brianna, Hudson, and Caden. Participating Young Adults also earned drawing tickets points during the 2021 Summer Reading Program. Our three drawing winners are: MaryAnn, Elle, and Shianne. Winners may pick up their prize at the library. Thank you to the Young Adults for all of their hard work and dedication over the summer. Thank you to the Friends of the Milford Library Foundation for sponsoring the 2021 Young Adult Summer Reading Program: Reading Colors Your World.
 
Milford Memorial Library and Arnolds Park Public Library provided 69 Young Adult, 4th through 12th graders, Summer Reading Subscription Boxes. The activities included using crayons to make new crayons, a keychain, and slime. They were able to design and grow their own chia pets, sculpted a flower/leaf lantern, and create a water color pencil bag. We had the young adults practice thinking outside the box by using silverware to create a wind chime, create a work of art with a plastic bag, water, and markers, and had them create a card and say “thank you” to someone who has helped them along the way.  Each box came with a themed recipe, playlist, watch list, and reading list. Thank you to the Friends of the Milford Library Foundation and the Friends of the Arnolds Park Public Library for sponsoring the 2021 Young Adult Summer Reading Subscription Boxes. Thank you to all the Young Adults who registered and received the YA Summer Reading Subscription Boxes.

Milford Memorial Library has some new youth books called Wonderbooks. They are unique because your child can read along with the audiobook inside of it. They also have the option to go into learning mode where the book will ask your child questions to further their reading. We hope to get more, but the three that we have so far are:   Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?, Lucky Ducklings, and                             Piranhas Don’t Eat Bananas.
