Milford Memorial Library will be closed on Monday, July 4, in observance of Independence Day. We will be back on Tuesday, July 5, at 9:30 a.m. We would like to wish everyone a happy and safe holiday.
 
Join us at the Milford Memorial Library for Past Times presented by Mary Drier from the Dickinson County Museum on Tuesday, July 12, at 7 p.m. Mary will be leading us through a discussion about Milford’s history.
 
Would you like a chance to shop the Friends of Milford Memorial Library’s Book Sale before it opens to the public? Please join other volunteers and the library staff for set up beginning at 11:00 a.m., on Thursday, July 21, with a potluck to follow. Once everything is in place, let the shopping begin. The Friends group is also in need of volunteers to work the book sale on Friday or Saturday. Milford Memorial Library is accepting books the Friends of Milford Library Foundation’s Book Sale. You may drop off books during normal business hours. As a reminder, we do not accept Reader’s Digest Condensed novels, magazines, textbooks, and encyclopedias. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation. On Wednesday, July 6, an open meeting of the Board of Trustees for the Milford Memorial Library will take place in the Milford Community Center. The agenda will be posted on MML’s website and front bulletin board at least 24 hours in advance of the meeting. Everyone is welcome to attend and offer their thoughts in order to make MML a better library.
 
MML’s book club, the Open Book Discussion Group, invites any interested individuals to come and discuss the featured book, Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens, on Tuesday, July 19, at 1:00 p.m. Copies can be found at the library. It is not necessary to attend all of the meetings, and you are welcome to come and go as you please.

Milford Memorial Library’s 2022 Youth Summer Reading Program has drawn in crowds of kiddos and their families. We offer so many types of programs, and the best part is, they are free to everyone. Check out Miss Becca’s 2022 Youth Summer Reading webpage to get all of the details. We will run library programs and Reading-Activity Logs (for prizes) through July. In July, there will be Summer Shenanigans at 1:00 p.m. on July 6 and 13, as well Building Bookworms at 10:30 a.m. on July 11, with both of them being at MML. The End Celebration will be at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 14, at the Dickinson County Nature Center.

On Wednesday, July 6, at 5:30 p.m., an open meeting of the Board of Trustees for the Milford Memorial Library will take place in the Milford Community Center and via Zoom. The agenda will be posted on MML’s website and front bulletin board at least 24 hours in advance of the meeting. Pick up library materials in the comfort of your air-conditioned vehicle! Reserve library materials online or by calling 712-338-4643 and have them waiting at MML’s drive-up window. Window hours are the same as operating hours.
 
MML has four hotspot devices available for patrons to checkout for seven days with only one renewal allowed. Overdue Hotspots will be charged $1.00 per day. Patrons will be held responsible for all applicable replacement costs and processing fees for the hotspot and/or accessories lost, stolen, or damaged while in their possession. Only one device will be checked out per household and must be brought back into the library for check in. Summer is finally here, and the Milford Memorial Library continues to have great things going on with the 2022 Youth Summer Reading Program: Read Beyond the Beaten Path. Check out everything you need to know by clicking on the ‘2022 Summer Reading Program’ tab and then the ‘Youth Summer Reading’ icon on our website (milford.lib.ia.us). Kiddos can earn an incentive bag and their name into a large prize drawing by completing all three levels of their ReadingActivity Log. Logs can be found in paper form or on the BookPoints website (bookpoints.milfordlibrary.net).

Join local author Lloyd Cunningham for a presentation on his book “The Death Boat”, Wednesday, June 22, at 6:30 p.m., at Milford Memorial Library. In the twilight of a summer evening, on an Iowa lake in 1929, two speedboats collided. Nine people were killed, and boating in the state was changed forever. Friction, even sabotage, ensued as the boat operators competed to become king of the lake. The enduring mysteries of the crash long have remained in the dark. "The Death Boat" pieces together newspaper stories, survivor accounts, public letters and private correspondence, witness testimony, supreme court decisions, and government records that shed light on those mysteries.

Summertime is here. Milford Memorial Library and Arnolds Park Library invite 4th - 12th graders to join in Y.A.D.O., Young Adults’ Day Off, Thursday, June 23, from 12:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m., at Milford Memorial Library.  We will have pizza, make an ice cream cone painting, and watch the Sandlot. This event costs $10.00 and registration is required. To register call Milford Memorial Library at 712-338-4643 or Arnolds Park Library at 712-332-2033.
 
The Young Adult (4th - 12th graders) Summer Subscription Boxes are available starting Tuesday, June 21. They will make lanterns, glow-in-the-dark stars, and a suncatcher. Additional fun is added with a playlist, reading list, and recipe.  This is a free program, but registration is required.  Register by calling 712-338-4643, emailing [email protected], or at the library. This box ends on Friday, July 1.
 
Join us Tuesday, June 28, at 7:00 p.m., at the Arnolds Park Library for Paint Night at the Library. The cost is $15 for registration. You may also register online.

Milford Memorial Library: Youth Corner

The 2022 Summer Reading Program Kick Off Celebration was a huge success. We had a total of 183 families and daycares that attended the free movies at the Milford Pioneer Theatre. Plus, they brought a lot of food donations for those in need. The next library collaboration program will be Rad Zoo at 10:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 16, at the Pearson Lakes Art Center.

Miss Becca had a great turnout for the first Building Bookworms (storytime) of the summer. The theme was all about bugs. Check out the pictures on MML’s Facebook of the kids making some pretty darn cute bugs out of colored Band-Aids. The upcoming MML programs are Summer Shenanigans and another Building Bookworms. The Milford Boy and Girl Scouts will be here for Summer Shenanigans at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 15. Building Bookworms will focus on trees, and it will be at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, June 20.

Join MML for our Adult Craft Series as we make Floral Wax Sachets on Wednesday, June 15, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., at Milford Memorial Library. This craft also comes in kit form. The kit will include wax, flowers/fruit, string, essential oils, form and instructions. The cost for this craft is $5.00 and registration is required. Read Beyond the Beaten path with MML’s Young Adult Summer Reading Program. Fourth through twelfth graders will complete reading challenges and earn points towards prizes. The Young Adult Summer Reading Program will begin on Thursday, June 2, through Wednesday, August 3. Register in person or with bookpoints at https://bookpoints.milfordlibrary.net/.  MML’s 2022 Summer Reading Program will also include three YA Subscription Boxes with the following themes: Survival, Camping, and Gardening.  The YA Subscription Box: Survival will be available for pick up starting Tuesday, June 7 through Friday, June 17. This box includes making a do-it-yourself compass, barometer, field journal, and information to learn about knot tying. Each of the Young Adult Summer Reading Subscription Boxes will include a themed recipe, playlist, and reading list. We look forward to having your Young Adult join us! The Milford Memorial Library will have an Adult Summer Reading Program again this year! All you have to do is pick up a bookmark at the library and fill it out throughout the summer or participate on bookpoints.milfordlibrary.net. You can bring the bookmark back to the library or log your reading online anytime between June 2 and August 5 for prizes. The Adult Summer Reading Program activities include the Adult Craft Series and Paint Night at the Library events throughout June and July. We encourage you to use the library in many different ways.

The three local libraries will be having a Kick Off Celebration with two free movie showings at 10:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. at the Milford Pioneer Theatre. Remember that if you bring two nonperishables, you can get one free popcorn. Also at the theatre, Miss Becca will have information on her own library programs that fall on Mondays and Wednesdays. She has a variety of nature and camping themed storytimes and small group activities in June and July.
