Have you come into the Milford Library and noticed the Buy Rite shopping cart? We are collecting items for the Upper Des Moines food bank in anticipation of a Hunger and Poverty in America/Dickinson County program on Tuesday April 8th at 7pm.

Jim Ramsey from the Milford Memorial Library will begin with a presentation inspired by A Place at the Table, a documentary that looks at hunger and poverty across the United States. The DVD will be available for check out at the library after the program.

The second part of the program will be a presentation of hunger and poverty issues in our local area. Annette Eckert, the Outreach Director for Upper Des Moines Opportunity, Inc., will provide information about this hidden problem here where we live with some real life background and statistics.

The last part of the program will be open to discussion from the audience. This will be a great opportunity to learn about this painful but real situation and ways you might be able to help.

Stop by the Milford Library to have a Blind Date with a Book! For the month of February, check out a book that is covered and labeled by genre. After you read the book, fill out a short survey of your Blind Date to enter a drawing for a gift basket! How would you like a chance to shop the Friends of the Milford Library's annual book sale before it is open to the public? We are looking for volunteers to join us for a pot luck (bring a dish to share) and to help us set up for the book sale at 5:30 on Thursday, July 25th. We will eat first, and then begin set up. We also need volunteers to work during the book sale on Friday, July 26th. There will be various shifts available from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

We are still accepting donations for the book sale! Bring your used books to the Milford Library! Sorry, we are unable to accept Reader's Digest Condensed Novels, Textbooks, or Encyclopedias. 

The Summer Reading Program is right around the corner! The kick-off date is June 4th. The program will run for five weekly sessions ending on July 2nd. Each week includes stories, crafts, music, drama, and more! Incentives and prizes will add to the fun and challenge the children to keep reading.

The presenters we will offer the children this year are Lisa Laird of Pockets Full of Fun from Orange City and Daniel Poe of Creations with a Twist from Ankeny. Daniel was invited back after last year’s very popular program. He will present Dig Up a Good Book with his balloon costumes. Lisa will present Diamonds, Dirt, and Discovery which is filled with ventriloquism, puppets, magic, and music.

This program is offered free of charge to preschool to 4th grade children of all abilities. Because of our limited budget, we must ask for your help in funding. Please let us know if you will consider sponsoring one of the presenters or furnishing funding for supplies, incentives, and prizes.
