All About Library Cards

Library cards are free to all users.  There is no need to be a Milford resident, though we are interested in keeping statistics on non-Milford use and will ask you for residency information to that end.

To apply for the library card, you must physically come to the library to fill out an application. You will be asked to provide the following information.
    • Place of primary residence (Milford, Rural Dickinson County, etc.)
    • Signature
    • Printed Name
    • Address (Mailing and Physical)
    • Phone
    • Email Address
    • A parent's signature will be required to start a library account for those under 18*
    • *Those 14 and up who can present their own acceptable form of ID can register for a library card without a parent's signature
    • Acceptable ID: (Driver's License, Passport, Local Utility Bill, etc.)
Responsibilities of the Cardholder include:
    • The signatory authority on the library card application will be held responsible for payment for lost or damaged items at the discretion of the librarian.  Signatory authority on a children's account will be the parent or guardian who signed the card.
    • No fines are charged on library materials returned past due (up to 60 days).  Items returned after 60 days overdue are addressed in a separate policy.
    • Renewals, reminders, warnings, and overdues may be requested via phone, text, email or any contact method accepted by the library.
How to use the library card
    • All items with the exception of most Video/DVD's are 14 day check-outs
    • Video/DVD items are 3 day check-outs
    • Milford is an Open Access participating library.  As a patron of our library, you may check out at any other Open Access participating library in Iowa!
    • There are two drop-boxes (drive up along the East Side, or walk-up to the Front door) for convenient return of materials after-hours.
    • Items may be renewed online if you have activited your library account for online access (ask a staff member about this service).  Otherwise just call or email the library.
    • The staff call patrons on Saturdays to remind them of items 10 days or more overdue.  Once items reach 60 days overdue a letter is sent and privileges are suspended until the matter is resolved.
    • Contact our staff to request items you cannot find in our collection.
    • Items can be reserved via our online catalog if you have activated your library account for online access (ask a staff member about this service).  Otherwise just call or email the library.
    • Patrons can check out ebooks from Bridges, Iowa's eLibrary. All you need is your library card number and phone number. Bridges gives you access to thousands of ebooks. For more information about how to connect your device and how to check out ebooks click here.
