INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY

Library Staffing and Closures:
During inclement weather, employees who are scheduled to work will exercise their own judgment about traveling to work. They will contact the Director by phone prior to starting time to share their decisions.
- Those who cannot safely travel to work will remain at home.
- Those who can safely travel to the library will work their normal schedule, as long as the library can be adequately staffed.
A minimum of two employees are required to keep the library open to the public. The Director may close the library early if:
- Weather conditions worsen so that employees must leave early to travel home safely, and
- Fewer than two employees remain at the library.
If two employees are not available to work, the Director will notify KICD & KUOO radio stations that the library is closed for the day.
The library will automatically close if the city offices close, and will consider closing if the Okoboji schools have closed, or if weather or travel advisories have been issued for Milford and surrounding areas.
Full time (salaried) employees who miss work due to inclement weather have the option of using earned vacation or comp time, or making up the missed time during normal library hours within the current pay period. (Makeup work is an option; not a requirement.) Hourly employees will be paid for hours actually worked, and are not guaranteed makeup hours.
In the event of severe summer weather, if the sirens sound, library doors will be locked and individuals who remain in the building will be required to go to the basement or leave the premises until the danger has passed.
